[16] 10-26 A splendid morning of tracting! We were invited in eight times and invited back six times in two and a half hours. Most of the people we saw were very sweet, and some were in trouble. So many hurt-looks eyes did I never see. And the Germans! — how the Breton hates the Boche! “Il n’y a aucun allemand qui est gentil!,” they say. Lots of the streets are named after people with very common cognomens, under which, on the street signs, appears the legend “Fusillé par les allemands.”
There’s an old gent in the branch, frère Daniel Valton, who loves to go rooting around in the mysteries of the Gospel.
This fact may explain why he’s known as Joseph Fielding Valton!
One contact this morning thought I was Breton and just guiding Elder Higley around. She said my features were tout-à-fait Breton, whereas Elder H. looks as Saxon as his name. You may be sure I thanked the kind lady profusely.
A fine cottage meeting with our referral today. She looks like a splendid prospect. Her mother seems a trifle less promising.
10-27 It’s D-Day today — “Diversion Day.” [17] the closest thing we have to a holiday. We tract all morning, and then we have free any time that we haven’t booked up with appointments. Our tracting was a trifle poor this morning, but our referral [Sister Trumier] came through with a baptismal commitment! We saw her for the first time day before yesterday, and today she agreed to be baptized — probably next Wednesday!
