Snow! at the homestead
You’ve heard about the ugly fact that smashes a beautiful theory? Well, this isn’t that bad, but I do now have to adjust a favorite line. When telling about the memorable snowball fight at Pacific High, I’ve been in the habit of saying it was the first snow we’d seen in California. Judging from Brent’s age in this kinda slanty shot, we must’ve had either some snow or a monumental fall of apricot petals, ’long about 1948. Not up to the standard of the freak storm of 1956, but not negligible, either. And very uncommon in these latitudes and altitudes.

It’s before the remodeling (see the gingerbread?), but enough later than the preceding picture for the ivy to have grown a lot on the porch supports.

Since that’s Mammy on the porch, being amused, Pappy must have snapped this one. Must say that it isn’t up to his technical standard. Maybe the snow distracted him: he really hated it. My new theory: the snow in my good right hand was only a remnant of the snowball I’d just pitched at him. Hence, perhaps, the slant.
