Before Sandisfield was, the Proprietors of Housatonic Township No. 3 functioned as an embryonic Board of Selectmen. Their records have survived, and Sandisfield Town Clerk Dolores Harasyko kindly allowed me to handle and photograph these priceless volumes, when I visited in 2007. Under her stewardship, the original pages of the Proprietors’ Book have been encapsulated in plastic and bound, as you see, in leather.
With my little Canon digital camera, I brought home images of key pages for further study. It’s taken some patching to make them as presentable as you’ll see: that plastic reflected the fluorescents on the Clerk’s office ceiling. When we visit again, I’ll try to get better pictures and to ascertain when Grandpa John first appears in this record. It may have been on
Page 73 (May 19, 1756), or perhaps not.
