Robert and Anne Munroe |
Remember death Here lies Interr'd ye Body of Mrs Anna Munro, widow of Mr Robert Munro (who was Slain by the Enemy on the 19th of April 1775) who departed this Life Aug 20th 1775 In ye 57th year of her age. |
Our cousin (half first cousin, eight generations removed) Ensign Robert Munroe, grandson of William the Immigrant, was the only officer to die on Lexington Green. He was then 62. His wife Anne Stone (1718-1775) survived him by only four months. You can’t see it in this photo, but there is an empty space to the right of Anna’s stone. Robert lay at Anna’s side until 1799, when they moved the bones of all the Martyrs back to the Green, where they now lie under what some claim as America’s oldest monument. |
