back The Seely Family, circa 1901 next
ElwynandParents

That’s their firstborn, my Uncle Arta Elwyn Seely,1 born in 1900. His parents’ faces look very familiar. If those were really wedding pictures, this must be some sort of pre-Photoshop composite.
1In case you’re wondering about two very male persons named Arta, please don’t feel all lonesome. Until 12 February 2008, the official records of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints reflected not only Grandpa Arta McLean Seely but also a duplicate set of records that differed only in his designation as a female. I protested and eventually had to send them a scan of Grandpa’s death certificate to settle the issue. They’ve fixed it.

I’ve been given to understand that the same extended family (that of our Uncle Brigham Young) that gave the world Feramorz Little and his brother Edwin Sobieski Little also named a man-child Arta deChrista Young, son of Brigham and of our Grandma Lucy Ann Decker Seely Young, and therefore a half-uncle of Grandpa Seely. Grandpa’s name was unusual, true enough, but not unprecedented in its wider context. I’ve heard folks who knew him refer to him as “Art,” “Artie,” “A.M.,” and “Bishop Seely.”
