Eight of Appleton’s twelve children survived him. He left lands to his three grown sons Frederick (25), Erastus (24), and Roswell (22); daughters Rachel and Sarah from his first marriage had died as infants. To his minor sons Grandpa Jason (15), Dexter (13), and Sylvester (4), and to his daughter Sally Fidelia (9—whose name he or his scrivener couldn’t spell, repeatedly) and to our still unborn Uncle Lucius he left “buildings” and a sort of trust fund that they would get when they turned 14; Appleton and Amanda had lost a first Sylvester (1806-1807), then recycled the name. Their Lucia Emily had also died young.
