Appleton and Amanda Hurd Stillman |
Appleton’s first thought was to provide for “…my Loving wife Amanda, while She remains my widow…”. He bequeathed to her, unless I’m mistaken, the main homestead with the beautiful rock-work, the use of a horse “when ever she wishes to use one,” all the household furniture, three cows, eight sheep, and $190.00. Sounds like he’s bidding up her bride-price in the remarriage market, inasmuch as she would lose it all if she married again. Even so, the codicil (executed the next day) specifies that if the property should revert to his other heirs in Amanda’s lifetime, presumably by her remarriage, they would then have to pay her $300. |
