…Previous medical event: 2017—Gangrenous gall-bladder
Stones The doctors had been telling Valerie that she had big gallstones that she should really have taken out. But they (the stones) had given her no identifiable symptoms. And she took some pride in being the only member of her family with no experience of surgery.

But then I had my wretched gangrenous gall-bladder experience, as a really undesired and unappreciated birthday present, this year.

And then, retrospectively, it came to seem that that very experience might have brought about unanticipated positive consequences:

Encountering sufficient energy and wakefulness in the dark of Sunday morning, I made a few notes on the development of my healing, and thought it might suit to share them with you, with expressions of gratitude for your kindly and professional care.

Your discharge instructions mention shortness of breath as something that needs to be reported. Some persists, particularly at bedtime, annoyingly, but nowhere near as bad as accompanied my pulmonary thrombosis, a few years ago. It seems to be associated with abdominal distension that had not prevailed in recent months before this incident. Depending on the interval since a pain pill, deep breathing stings a little, on the right side, and belts and waistbands tend to hurt a bit. With my CPAP (unlike the monster Respiratory brought to my hospital bed; that was a dramatic incident), I have no discernible sleep apnea, although I’m given to it otherwise.

Rejoicing in increased wakefulness and acuity. Before the operation, I had become accustomed to  work 2-3 hours at the desk computer, then sleep 30-90 minutes. Always struggling to stay awake, focus on the screen, and remember what’s next. Always interpreted the pattern as a tolerable consequence of morphine, and was
