2005—Commencement!

Mary Beth, with Extension School Dean Michael Shinagel
After our ghost-story detour on the 6th, we did make it in time to attend Mary Beth’s induction into ASL (Alpha Sigma Lambda honorary).

Both Chris and Mary Beth will volunteer, without undue persuasion, that Harvard throws a better party than anybody else.

This was also Larry Summers’ last Commencement as President of Harvard. In case you don’t remember, he’d had the temerity to opine that males might have an inborn advantage over females in math and science, and his credentials as a liberal Democrat did not suffice to deliver him from the wrath of the feminists on his faculty.

To add to his trials, Summers was losing our friend Kim Clark as Dean of the Business School. To the particular astonishment of people without a solid grounding in the beliefs of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Kim had accepted President (our Cousin) Gordon Hinckley’s call (not just job offer) to serve as President of Ricks College (soon to be renamed Brigham Young University—Idaho).

There was clearly a lot that Summers wished he had back. He noted, for example, in his farewell remarks, that when the various deans came up to present the graduates, Kim was the only one who observed all the ancient rituals precisely.
