The two Bethanies took part in this apple-picking excursion, too. Those look like Macouns (pronounced McGowans), for which one would drive many miles, in season. They’re the premier New England eating apple: not much good for cooking, and they don’t keep worth sixpence. But if you can crunch them, right off the tree, nothing else comes close. We learned about them from Gus Manderino, who brought us some, one fall day. |
