1983—On Our Way: Strasburg |
As we told the Caldwells who we were and how we connect to the Neffs, they informed us that their town boasts several Neff mills, in various states of evolution and devolution, and that the one we wanted was the former mill of “John Neff the ‘Mormon’,” whose story remained in local lore. They said they knew the present owners and would be willing to make contact with them on our behalf. Would we care to come back for breakfast the next morning? |

We would and we did, dressed up by then in our Sunday-go-to-meetin’ best. The Caldwells graciously fed us and then led the way to the still-splendid Neff homestead, where the owners showed us around, inside and out. The rest of these photos, inadequately captioned, record this marvelous encounter.
By the way, didn’t we stay the next night with the Caldwells? I retain only half a memory, but I do remember Mr Caldwell showing us his barnful of Conestoga wagons. And we did maintain some correspondence after we left. Not nearly long enough. |
