1983—Muffin ’n’ Dahlias |
|
Also of the dahlias that Asher Specter gave us. I was puttering in the garden, here on the Ashland Street side, one day early in our tenure at Timbaloo, when elderly Asher came along on his daily constitutional around our block, from his home around the corner on Elmore Street. Stopping to chat, he handed me a little brown paper bag containing a cluster of dahlia tubers. Describing them as “prize dahlias,” he pressed them on me “for the sake of good fellowship.”
Another time, shortly before Asher died, he gave me a pocket chess set of some antiquity, with an inscription inside indicating that he’d received it as a gift, many years earlier. I still treasure it, for the sake of fine memories and good fellowship. |
