Member and Missionary Conferences
The time for these retrenchments in the French Mission’s part of the Church had clearly arrived, as Pappy’s counselor President Robert Chollet made clear in this note, which surfaced (Providentially: can you possibly doubt it?) only this week (it’s 3 September 2020) among my memorabilia of this marvelous period of our lives in service together.
Chollet I showed it to Valerie, who protests that she can’t read it. In case her barrier is one of language, after all these years, here’s a translation:

Sunday. 10 November 1968
Mission Committee

Dear Brother Richard.

I don’t know how nor how many times to thank you for the clear and luminous explanations that you have just brought on a subject which has been anguishing with confusion and obscurity during the past years.

This is a historic meeting, from this point of view.

A key component of “correlation” was that the auxiliary organizations (Relief Society, Young Men’s and Young Women’s Mutual Improvement Associations, and the Primary Association) were thenceforth to function as auxiliaries subordinate to, and under the authoritative direction of, the ecclesiastical government. One way to look at the Great Auxiliary Débacle of 1963 is to regard it as a response to the auxiliaries’ acting ‘way too big for their britches, worldwide. The episode in the sidebar on the next page illustrates the immense improvement that we achieved by setting these relationships to rights.
