Not sure whether the folks had already met Esmé and Chester Kiesling; in any case, we did all gather for a visit at their cute little Chinese-style cottage1 in le Vésinet.

Esmé seized the opportunity to bring out this gorgeous embroidered “mantilla” and to relate how Queen Mother Maria Cristina of Spain had presented it to her in 1920, after a command performance of flamenco dance.
Only later, in 1969, as we were leaving France for good, would she give the mantilla to Valerie, remarking that since she had no descendants…
