Wedding Presents
In keeping with custom, many friends and family members, as well as friends of both our families, did contribute kindly gifts to help us over the initial hump of newly-married poverty. No photos survive to remind us, on the order of Mammy’s and Pappy’s pile of loot in Brigham City, but our dear Esmé made sure that this little remembrance accompanied her magnificent one. Sorry about the damage to the photo.

The two ladies didn’t actually meet until Christmas, 1967, when we came with the folks to Le Vesinet, and Esmé showed Mammy and Valérie the lovely embroidered mantilla that had been her on-stage trademark through the decades, then gave it to her when we left France for good in 1969. It adorned our parlor in Timbaloo for more years, and then Rebecca wore it for her wedding to Mark.
