back Frances Mariah Stillman Russell Neff next
Frances Mariah (Maria) Stillman was born 29 may 1830, the month after the Church was organized, in Westmoreland, Ostego, New York. She was the daughter of Jason and Harriet Elizabeth Seymour Stillman. She grew up in a home where there was great love between her father and mother, but with much work and responsibility on the shoulders of the mother. Her father became ill with an incurable disease. The time came when it was decided that it would be better for his health if he went to a warm climate. So bidding his family goodbye, he packed a wagon with food and warm clothing and left never to return. He gave the children a ride to the gate where he let them off and waved until they could no longer see him. His plan to move his family to the warmer climate did not come to pass as he died of tuberculosis before this could be accomplished.
Site of Appleton Stillman’s home in Colebrook, Connecticut. According to Bob Grigg, Town Historian, Grandpa Appleton and his sons, perhaps including a very young Grandpa Jason, did this rock-work themselves.
