We were delighted and honored to welcome both our kinfolk and other associates of the birthday girl. Left to right in the driveway, Dane McBride, James Allen, Renée Allen, Brent (from the front, mirabile dictu), Ann Richards Cox, Ken Goates, Mike Goates, Deena Goates. And lots of flowers.

Around four o’clock (the very hour, adjusted for “daylight saving,” at which little “Alice” officially came into the world), we mounted up in several cars and headed uphill to the Alva Alexander picnic area in Mill Creek Canyon, which Brent had reserved for our use. There we continued delightful, heavy-duty schmoozing, sang “Happy Birthday, Dear Leola/Mammy/Grandma/ Coach” most lustily, and ate what we could of we’d brought, including a white sheet cake with white frosting, adorned with yellow rosebuds (Leola’s durable preference). No candles, in deference to fire regulations in the forest.

As we said, twenty-three of us gathered. Eighteen, fittingly enough, are family members; we’ll list them and our relationships later. The other five, however, feel like family to us but came for other reasons. Their connections to Leola reflect diverse periods and aspects of her career. Except for Betty, they all (however partially or candidly) appear in this departure shot; so, this may be a good moment to introduce them…
