back Uncle (26G) King Richard I Plantagenet next
Rich and powerful ancestors don’t make us better than anybody else. Uncle King Richard’s reputation and victories don’t make us famous, beloved, or wealthy. Nor do we have to be wicked and weak, just because Grandpa King John was. If we’re wise, though, maybe we can find something in their lives that’s worth copying in ours. And maybe something else worth avoiding. Because they were prominent, we get to know more about them.
A lot of people these days believe they have royal blood. Many (not all) really do: kings tend to work hard to have kids. We, for example, really do. Here are the four Plantagenet kings of England whom we can rightly call “Grandpa,” each listed with his “consort,” our Grandma. They seem to have favored girls named Eleanor.

The second king in the chart is Uncle King Richard’s kid brother John, who appears as a whiny lion (without a mane) in the Disney version of “Robin Hood.” John’s grandson, our 23rd great-grandfather Edward I “Longshanks,” was the bad guy in the movie “Braveheart.”

Now, on the next page, we’ll follow the line all the way to us.

1This is the Book of Uncles, not the Book of Kings. I hope I’ve managed to make you curious about your royal ancestry. So when you’re ready, go here for pictures and stories about these four kings and other interesting folks in their families and ours.
