Appendix: Saumur
  • In 1940, the World War II Battle of Saumur saw teenaged officer cadets from the Cavalry School defend valiantly the town and the south bank of the Loire against the advancing Nazis. Since Marshal Pétain had already surrendered, some consider this engagement as one of the first heroic acts of the Resistance.
We stopped here only for these photographs; Saumur was one of many picturesque places we would traverse on many trips between Paris and the West, through the Loire Valley.
