Member and Missionary Conferences

When Valerie and I took part in missionary zone conferences, it was generally Pappy’s assistant, Elder Mitt Romney (until he went home at the end of his mission), who organized the programs, assigning topics and durations to us as speakers.

Did I already mention that it was in this connection that we contracted our enduring addiction to speaking in Church? Lacking professional clergy, we Latter-day Saints often hear from those who preach to us how much happier they’d be if somebody else had the assignment. Well, that’s emphatically not how Valerie and I feel. And I’m afraid Elder Romney got stuck more than once with our tendency to exceed our time limits or the scope of our allotted topics. But what could he do? We were the President’s kids, and Pappy was disinclined to tell us to shut up. Even when he maybe shoulda. Kinda fun to outrank Mitt, however briefly.
