Dolmen |
At first blush, my companion would seem to be braving a significant hazard. But then one realizes that these giant stones (megaliths) haven’t budged from their places in a very long time. This is a dolmen—a megalithic structure left here by an earlier resident civilization. Happens to be located right in downtown Tours, where we’d walk past it while tracting and shopping. I can’t vouch for the absolute historicity of this tale, but I can tell you that I asked a presumably-knowledgeable local citizen (1) who built the dolmen, and (2) for what purpose. He replied, and I have no reason to doubt his word, that these were very old stones, and that mine was a very old question. They say that Julius Caesar asked it, a couple of thousand years ago, when he passed through Tours. And that nobody around had any idea of the answer… |
