Journal January 21, 1964
January 22—Elder Berthelsen is sick today; so I’m taking my turn to stay with him at the house, so that his companion doesn’t lose the whole day.

Received today a visit from the new chieftains of the West Zone: Elder Stephen Nadauld, my old companion from the Salt Lake orientation, and his companion, Elder John Robertson. Elder Nadauld and went to visit the Castres to plan their baptism, only to find that he hadn’t yet completely conquered his Word of Wisdom problems. After a long and serious discussion and a kneeling prayer, Brother Castre decided to work toward being ready for baptism with his wife next Saturday at 11 a.m. She, at least, will be ready.

Last evening, we held a splendid meeting with the Dubois family. Mr Dubois was our initial contact, and he set an appointment for us to return. But he wasn’t there, and his wife set a new one for last night. As we arrived, it was young Michel (8 years) who opened the door and said his parents weren’t there. I chatted with him a bit, and then his mother appeared, confessing that she was in the habit of making him do that, so as to get rid of door-to-door visitors (I’ll chide her about that, some day!). But she’d recognized my voice, and so she let us in. The whole family received the first lesson very well, and their prayer at the end of the meeting was lovely to hear. We hope they’ll persevere in their decision to study further. Their baptism is set for February 27.

After that, we went to President Roux’s house, and this visit was a true inspiration. That man is entirely devoted to the progress of the Church at Tours. Pity that he hasn’t had better help, up until now.
Didn’t preserve any photos of President Roux, from my time in his branch. This one’s from 1967 or ’68; he’s singing to the accordion, in the little salle where they still met. Those are Mammy’s shoulder and arm at left.
