Journal March 28-30, 1962
March 23— More information on the fascinating Sister Salomon. She has inherited some of her late father’s properties; he lived at St-Brieuc. Her mother, from an old noble family (she got tired of carrying some fifteen forenames, and so got rid of them), still lives there, and she also has extensive possessions. For her part, Sister Salomon manages the family’s assets in Rennes and runs a real estate office.

I’ve lost a lot of weight. My suit’s getting too big. I do feel better, though.

It’s official! As long as I stay at Rennes, I have the Mission’s permission to serve as President Renaud’s second counselor. You can’t imagine how happy I am. The letter came to President Renaud from President Woolley.
March 24—Sister Salomon found us a person to play the harmonium for our branch meetings. He’s a 90-year-old kinsman of hers, a retired colonel, who lives with her and whom she cares for. She says he used to play the organ in a big church for years. We’ll bring him to the salle this afternoon so that he can see whether the old fingers still work. Then, before he’s aware, the party will start, and he”ll be there.

We met yesterday the family of M. Jacques Simon of the Quai Émile Zola. M. Simon has a son named Jacques (Jack) who is Brent’s age, and we may be able to touch the family by getting them in contact. The parents profess atheism.
March 28—Yesterday we spoke at length with a lady who works as concierge at 2, rue Martenot—the administrative offices of the parochial school system at Rennes. We doubt that she’s sincere enough to follow the path of conversion, but we must always hope.

Our current goal is to fill a 55-seat bus for the district conference at Le Mans. If we invest enough faith and works, we’ll surely succeed.

March 30—Here are some official Priesthood ordinances that give me great pleasure and which need to be recorded:

In the newly-organized Mutual Improvement Association, Sister Alfréda Perrot as president and Sister Annick Leroy as first counselor.

In the Primary, also just organized, Sister Georgette Leroy as president, and Sister Irma Delétang as teacher. In the Sunday School, Brother Jean Fruchet as superintendant, with Brother Emile Guitton and Brother Daniel Valton as counselors, and Sister Alfréda Perrot as secretary.

…with apologies
to Émile Guitton, who deserves
a much better likeness
