Journal January 18-22, 1962

President Woolley called the best one in the Mission. For myself, I suspect the operation of an excessively active imagination. It’s perhaps a diabolic manifestation, but I really doubt it, knowing the people who’ve become mixed up in it. But that’s all it takes to start a apostasy: one sincere but wandering person—maybe even a bit crazy—who claims to have received manifestations, and then…

I’ve read some of Sister Fruchet’s visions, and they don’t have the spirit of prophecy.

21-1-62— I’ll report here only a little of what happened yesterday. Here are the salient points [90]: The big guys came yesterday morning: President Woolley of the Mission and Brother Joseph Hasoppe, formerly of that Presidency and now a member of the General Building Committee (a Belgian-born brother). They called together the people involved in the affair of Sister Fruchet’s visions and explained the order of the Church and offered them the choice, either to repent and follow the authorities, or to abandon the truth. They all accepted the authority of the Church leaders. We now believe that the affair is over.

In any case, I’ve had a great opportunity to receive a very well-presented lesson in the correct way to put an end to dissensions and errors among the members of the Church. I’d like to record all the details of what happened yesterday evening between 6:30 and 10:30, but a lot of it’s very personal to the participants; I won’t let myself say more. But I’ll never forget these things, and I thank the Lord for them.

January 22— This morning I finished reading the Book of Mormon in French. I’ve learned this: if I stick with a regular reading schedule through the first half of the Book, then I have no trouble finding the time to finish it. There’s so much there, moreover, that I keep wanting to pass along, that I no longer need to dread assignments to teach or to speak in Church. Not to mention the well-advertised benefits to my testimony of the Gospel.
