12-6 J’ai trouvé un moyen presqu’infaillible de me remettre dans l’esprit de mon appel comme missionnaire. Quand il arrive que j’ai des pensées étrangères, tout simplement je bourdonne ou chante silencieusement une des cantiques de louange que je connais et que j’aime bien. Les meilleures [52] cantiques à propos semblent être “l’Esprit du Dieu Saint” (le numéro 150 des cantiques anglais) et le “Sanctus” de Gounod, celui qui a été enrégistré par le choeur du Tabernacle. Puis, bientôt, je ressentis une joie, une allegresse même, je me rappelle de II Néphi 23:3, et voici l’Esprit de retour! Essayez-le, de temps en temps, si cela vous apparaît drôle, incroyable, ou simplement trop pieux. Rappelez-vous bien des hypocrites hurlent louanges vers Dieu, mais néanmoins l’esprit des vraies louanges ne comprend ni celui de l’hypocrisie, ne celui de la fausse piété de n'importe quelle espèce.
12-7 Encore un service de baptéme ce soir, mais cette fois il ne sera que les Elders Enos et Hill qui auront des gens à baptiser. Nous avons pourtant assez de
travail à faire pour les aider à préparer la piscine et toutes les autre choses qu’il faut avoir. Notre chauffe-eau portatif nous donne toujours des ennuis, laissant couler de l’eau au plancher et s’arrêtant fréquemment.
Nous avons entendu le seul concert en France de l’Orchestre appelé The Eastman Philharmonia. Trés bien joué. Les spectateurs ont demané et reçu cinq encores, y compris [53] “The Stars and Stripes Forever.” Assez bien reçus, ces Yankees.
12-8 La situation chez Leroys est un peu amélioré ce soir, je crois. La mère était plus amicale qu’avant, nous appellant “frère” et en général possèdant un plus bon esprit qu’elle ne l’avait dimanche passé. Elle a dit aussi que les enfants vont tous venir aux réunions après-demain. Peut-être allons-nous pouvoir les montrer le droit chemin encore, avec l’aide de notre Dieu.
L’autre soir, chez soeur
Delétang, nous avons été interrompu par M. Le Tiec, prédicateur de la congrégation de Rennes d’une secte qu’on appelle “Les Amis de l’Homme.” Ce monsieur ne nous a pas vus tout d’abord, mais il a parlé avec soeur Delétang

12-6 I’ve found a nearly infallible way to get back into the spirit of my missionary calling. When I have foreign thoughts, I simply hum or sing silently one of the hymns of praise which I know and love. The best [52] ones for this purpose seem to be “The Spirit of God” (#150 in the English hymn-book) and Gounod’s “Sanctus,” the one that the Tabernacle Choir recorded. Then, promptly, I feel joy, even lightness of heart, I remember II Nephi 23:3, and lo and behold: the Spirits’ back! Try it, now and then, if the idea seems funny, unbelievable, or just too pious. Remember that many hypocrites throw praises toward God, but nevertheless the spirit of true praise includes neither that of hypocrisy nor any kind of false piety.
12-7 Another baptismal service this evening, but this time only Elders Enos and Hill will have anybody to baptize. We have plenty of work to do, though, to help them get the font and everything ready. Our portable water heater always acts up, spilling water on the floor and turning itself off every now and then.
We went to the only concert of the Eastman Philharmonia in France. Very well performed. The audience demanded and received five encores, including [53] “The Stars and Stripes Forever.” Well received, these Yankees.
12-8 The situation with the
Leroys seems to be a bit improved this evening. The mother was more friendly than before, calling us “brother” and in general showing a better spirit than she had last Sunday. She said also that her children will all come to the meetings, the day after tomorrow. Maybe we’ll be able to show her the right way after all, with God’s help.
The other evening, at Sister Delétang’s, we were interrupted by M. Le Tiec, preacher of the Rennes congretation of a sect that calls itself “The Friends of Man.” This gentleman didn’t notice us at first, but he spoke with Sister Delétang
