Paris
[4] Spent in flight to Paris, with an eight hour layover in Montreal. Six of us — three elders and three L.M.’s — toured the town, guided by a very personable cab driver. Left him an Articles of Faith card.

10-18 Arrived in Paris at 9:03 a.m. Met by several elders and news of the following: there was an Algerian riot here last night, and the fuzz are jumpy. Furthermore, there’s a temporary strike on and therefore no electric power. Hence, no traffic lights. Hence, the most incroyable traffic jam this side of Boston. Hence, we didn’t make it to the mission home until about 10 a.m.

Met President and Sister Hinckley. They’re very pleasant folks. Slept until 4:30; got up before any of the others and then got called on to accompany Elder Haynie while he took two L. M.’s to the train station. We returned too late for supper but were well recompensed by having seen a good deal of Paris at sunset.

What a city! For months now I’ve been telling myself that no city could possibly be as terrific as my dreams of Paris . So, I’ve been steeling myself for the worst, expecting by way of overcompensation some sort of incomprehensible squalor. But this city! I haven’t imagined it half so beautiful as it is even in my most romantic moments of idealism. Everywhere on a grand scale are the evidences of
