Farewell
Back in those days, a congregation that sent a missionary “into the field” would customarily devote a worship service (one of its regular weekly “Sacrament meetings”) to seeing him off in style. A whole industry grew up, something like the wedding industry in Utah these days, to extract the last possible dollar from family and friends who wished to celebrate such occasions. Since then, and apparently partially in reaction to excessive commercialization, the Church authorities have changed the rules, and these elaborate farewells don’t happen any longer.

My folks were something on the order of big shots in the San Bernardino Third Ward and the surrounding LDS and educational communities; so, it was to be expected that a fuss would be made over my mission departure.

Accordingly, we handed out this nicely (commercially)-printed program at my farewell. This image is very close to actual size. The other side of the tri-fold handout appears on the next page, inasmuch as we lack room here.
