Some Thoughts About “Career”(s?)
From some points of view, I suppose, it makes sense to regard this extended Chapter Three adolescence as the kickoff to my career, whatever that is or may have been. Have I had a career? More than one? If so, when did it or they start? Are they still going on in my dotage, even though I describe myself in this Twenty-First Century as “retired”? At the beginning of the events chronicled in this chapter, I was no longer a child at home, but still a dependent; engaged in increasingly difficult, expensive, and remunerative undertakings, and less and less a material burden to my parents...

When and in what terms does it make sense to look back on a completed “career” and to judge it with respect to some failure-to-success continuum? Certainly not yet, from the point of view of the early 1970s, as we experienced them.
