Christmas Greetings, 1947 |
Once we’d fairly settled in as Californians, Pappy couldn’t resist rubbing it in. ’Specially to friends and loved ones who remained in Utah and other snowy places. Pappy loved the beach. Observe him at lower left, in all his monstrous glory. Mammy went there under protest and huddled1 under a beach umbrella. Our friend Leola (yes, another Leola) Ord showed a more conventional attitude toward sunshine. 1In fairness, this was before sunscreen, and I’ve inherited some minor vitiligo from Mammy. It bleaches out patches of skin, so that they don’t tan and are therefore subject to sunburn. We started to notice it in our respective thirties. Mine’s mostly on the backs of my hands. |
