“Sunken Heights,” 1945-6
I visited with John and Nada Nicholas (he’s a former mayor of Sunset) who arrived in town in the late 1940s, shortly after our departure, and who were good friends of the Dunaways through their shared Sunset decades. Their kindness has provided many of the details in this little photo-memoir.

A few years later, alas, I read in the local newspaper that they had both perished in the fire that consumed their home. The report commented on their long and loving companionship and that it was strangely fitting that they should be together at the end.
This decorative concrete wall separated our back yard from that of our neighbors (Morris? McKenzie? — little Janet’s family, in any case) to the north. Did then; still does, now.

I was playing out there one day, wrapped in some unfathomable five-year-old fantasy, and found some reason to toss leaves over the wall into the neighbor’s back yard. The neighbor got mad and threatened to call the police. Scared me, of course, and I ran to my parents, who instructed me to apologize. I did, and the episode blew over, leaving me relieved but still puzzled as to what all the fuss was about.
