back The Wheelers in Freedom—1830 next
This current (2004) topological map of the Freedom area centers on the hamlet of Elton where our family lived.

No deed seems to have been recorded, either for Isaac or Oliver, but deed-recording was a spotty thing, in those days. We know that Oliver lived on a one-acre property in Freedom as early as 1835, and that he purchased in 1852, two years before his death, the 1.13-acre corner lot across from the Elton village church. We suspect that with this transaction he finally managed to become the owner of the home he had built and where he had been a tenant for 25 years. We further speculate, on evidence that will soon appear, that his acre may have occupied the southwest corner of the Deckers’ farm property, and that the two households may have combined their resources on arrival circa 1827 and set up something like a “family compound.”
