The Nauvoo House |
The Joseph Smith Historical Center (RLDS -- on Hyde Street between Water and Sidney) displays the original of this painting by David Hyrum Smith, Joseph’s and Emma’s last child. Emma was pregnant with David, in fact, when the mob murdered his father. David was a painter and composer of some talent, whose life began in sadness and turmoil, and who saw rather a lot of the same in all his days.
I’m told that the woman and child in the painting are meant to depict Emma and David himself. It’s unclear to me whether the Nauvoo House ever looked like this, or whether it reflects only a merger of wishes and imagination. On the other hand… |
