By the time Grandma Seely died in early 1943,
Vera Knapton had long been a member of the family: first, as the widow of Grandma’s nephew Franklin McGregor Wilson, and recently (June, 1941) the widow of Grandma’s big brother Seymour Neff.
When Grandpa was diagnosed with cancer, she came to help out. The family story goes that Grandpa felt they should marry to avoid scandal, since they were spending so much time together. They did, and Vera became a widow for the third time when Grandpa died in the spring of 1945. Need I point out that Vera’s one of my principal family heroines, having seen at least three husbands lovingly through their final days? In this rather wonderful photo, Grandpa A. M. Seely is at far right, with Vera at his side. On the back appear TWO notations, in different hands:
