Summer, 1954 or 1955. We drove up the Pacific coast to British Columbia. The Princess of Nanaimo took us across to Victoria.

Realizing we were in a foreign country (pretty much the first time for any of us, if you don’t count a couple of furtive ventures into Tijuana) we thought we’d investigate the exotic pleasures of “crumpets,” to the considerable puzzlement of the retail person we asked. Directed eventually to what we now call “English muffins” (unfamiliar, then), we sampled them in the motel and were not impressed. Nobody told us that they generally require toasting… |
