Wherever she lived, Leola would join or gather about her a group of like-minded literary ladies. Her Utah group called itself (or she called it) “the Goonies.” If this California group bore any such appellation, we don’t remember it.

We have some slender volumes autographed by some of these lively-looking women, kindly given to us when we were young and when they were still around. We’d recognize their names, if we encountered them again.

As for Leola, she published stories and essays here and there. We’ve misplaced the publication data for the piece on the next page, “As the Heart Grows,” but we’ve had many occasions to share it.* The next item appeared in the magazine section of the Toronto Star for May 31, 1947, the year after we moved from Utah to San Bernardino. Readable enlargements appear on the three succeeding pages. After that, we reproduce a story on which Leola and Verna collaborated and which they published in the Improvement Era.

We need to pull together the definitive collection of her published works, but probably not for the centennial version of this volume.
*It is worth mentioning that Leola’s granddaughter Becca (Rebecca Wilhite, Brent’s daughter) follows VERY much in her grandma’s tradition. Their mortal lifetimes don’t overlap, but…
