To this point, Bacon seems to have represented himself in his dealings with Danforth’s court. With a full jury trial in the offing, however, he now retained John Hoare,* attorney of Concord, to draft a set of “Reesons” to justify his appeal.

I’m no lawyer, thank the Lord, but even I can discern the sheer pettifogging barratry of this very ugly document. Don’t try to read it on this page: it’s too small, and Hoare’s handwriting (not to mention his prose and his logic) lacks the clarity of Danforth’s. If you’re curious about the details, please check out the enlargement on the next three pages.
*I should probably be punished for opining that Mr Hoare should have spelled his name otherwise. The pronunciation’s fine. Others have remarked upon it, too.
