A Cautionary Episode
We’ve known for many years that our ancestry includes at least four Mayflower passengers, and Maggie and I continue to enjoy membership in the Society of Mayflower Descendants by virtue of that distinguished heritage. On the fourth day of this year, however, FamilySearch sent me a very attractive display, announcing a fifth passenger for us, this one through Evaline McLean, in our McLean descendancy. This is its top half, asserting a lineal connection from Pilgrim Richard Warren through seven generations to our Grandma Evaline.

Now, Evaline’s line has been one of our “brick walls,” throughout my career as a family genealogist. We’ve been pretty clear on her McLean line, and her mother Grandma Elizabeth Kirk is listed among our early Utah-immigrant pioneers, but her Kirk line has been fuzzy. And now, to our surprise, FamilySearch runs it back through the Dunbars to Richard Warren.

Before we rejoice too energetically, and particularly before we write a check to accompany a supplemental application to the Society, we need to verify several relationships, asserted here, that come as news to us. As it turns out, William Dunbar may or may not be Elizabeth Kirk’s paternal grandfather, as claimed in the FamilySearch Family Tree, and FSFT (sounds like a distressed feline, no?) does indeed list him as the eleventh and last child of certified Warren descendant Sarah Thaxter and her husband Peter Dunbar. That attribution, alas, appears to be in error.
