Victor Harvey Mortensen (1935-2019)

Through most of our first sixteen years in Utah, Harvey and Pat Mortensen were nearly the only other “senior citizens” in the very youthful Fox Point(e) Ward. Harvey was our Home Teacher, with various companions, for several years, and he and I took turns administering Priesthood blessings to family members, including each other.

Harvey and Patsy were in a traffic accident, early in our acquaintance, that left her severely crippled, and his tender care of her until her death in 2012 was an inspiration to all their neighbors. Valerie and I sat overnight with Patsy a couple of times in a rehabilitation facility: it distressed her to be left alone, and he needed relief.

alt Harvey’s career was with the Boy Scouts, and he loved their outdoor activities. He painted the bluebirds and made us a present of them—for Christmas, I think. Their home, a couple of blocks from Chankly, was profusely adorned with his paintings of scenes from nature.

After Patsy’s passing, he married Phyllis Griffin, and we four usually sat together (up front, where Valerie could hear) in church. They kindly helped me with the Temple work my research generated. Since Harvey left us, Phyllis has continued in that rôle.
