Maggie, Mayflower
Mag
May 9, 2018, in the Empire Room of the Joseph Smith Memorial Building (erstwhile Hotel Utah) in Salt Lake City. At the Spring Banquet of the Utah Society of Mayflower Descendants, it was my huge honor and pleasure to present to my senior grandchild, Margaret Anderson Millar, her certificate of membership in the Utah and General Societies.

This was pretty nearly my last service to the Society, after nearly a decade as its Secretary, and it was particularly sweet to me, for several reasons. We had enrolled all our grandchildren as Junior Members, around the time I joined, in the fond hope that some of them, at least, would see fit to “graduate” into full, adult membership. As the firstborn of our Juniors, Maggie is of course the first to “age into” eligibility. As it turns out, the records indicate that she is also the first Utah Junior to do so, ever.

The three similarly-cheerful ladies at her side, of course, had to brave the Society’s notoriously-burdensome application procedure from scratch, as it were, whereas Maggie was able to piggyback on my already long-term membership: if I’m a descendant, then so are my kids, and theirs, and theirs, to the last syllable of recorded time.

The Society’s Historian had helped all the newcomers through the process, and it would normally have been his prerogative to stand behind the pink-draped rostrum, this evening. But we were in the middle of a change of incumbency in that central position on our Board of Assistants, and so I wangled the opportunity, despite, I fear, some distress on the part of the new Historian.

The happy face at far left, by the way, belongs to Dr. George Garmany, then Governor General of the Society, who happened to be honoring us with a visit that evening. A charming gentleman, whom we were glad to welcome among us.
