Back and forth with Tom Rogers

…continued

zillionth time I rejoice in it. And the “Recordare, Jesu pie” from the Sequentia of Mozart’s Requiem still blesses me with chills.

And (as various Book of Mormon authors love to insist) this is not all: the bumpogenic genius (if you’ll permit) pervades well beyond the range to which convention would limit its search for great art. You said that you were unacquainted with the brilliant piece of juvenile nonsense that I’ve appended. So that our giving the name of “Chankly” to our dwelling didn’t resonate properly for you. Nor my subsequent prideful claim to the title of “the Chankly Bore.”

Before leaving “The Jumblies” for your delectation, I’ll just note that our “honeymoon cottage” during my senior year at MIT was the basement rear “studio apartment,” formerly the kitchen of the old brownstone-front mansion at 115 Beacon Street in Boston; it bore, in its squalid uniqueness, the cognomen of “The Sieve and Crockery Jar.” Our dinner bell at “Timbaloo,” for thirty years our beloved home in Arlington, Massachusetts, was “The Coppery Gong.” Fizzy soda was “Ring-Bo-Ree.” Our cherished sourdough start was “Beautiful Yeast.” I tried to hang “Lovely Monkey with Lollipop Paws” on our youngest son, but Valerie wouldn’t have it.

Each of our children learned by heart (and has, I fear, since forgotten) “The Jumblies” from my bedtime recitations, though some of its extracted elements have proved more durable, even in their grown-up vocabularies.

Again and always, thanks for your friendship and for the light it and your writings continue to bring to us.

[Our Danish grandmother, Anna Eloese Poulsen Anderson, used to address Brent and me by this honorific, when we were kids. It’s pronounced bøss-uh-mahn, where “ø” is like German “ö” or French “eu.”. Learned only recently, by Rick’s kind offices, that it translates as “bogey”, though the first version (“booger”) startled a bit more!]
