2015—“Health Insurance,” yet again!
…Previous medical event: 2014—Failed Back Syndrome

After my dreadful experience with the desk-jockeys at Regence, we imposed on our faithful health-care providers the similar incompetence of Humana, from 2011 through 2014. It was their wretched performance through the critical life-threatening events of 2014 that drove us to sign up in 2015 with (save the mark) the American Association of Retired Persons.*

To be specific, it was primarily Humana’s interference with the diagnostic process that put me in mortal peril during my painful episode with a lung clot. If they hadn’t squatted so clumsily and penuriously in the path of the diagnostic process, I wouldn’t have suffered for weeks under false diagnoses of congestive heart failure (which killed about 38,000 in America in 1990) and pulmonary hypertension (also ’way too frequently lethal). The correct diagnosis was terrible enough, but the unnecessary and terrifying side excursions for business reasons into the Valley of the Shadow remain hard to forgive. We lack the authority to jail them or hang them, but at least we can fire them, as we did.

As I write this in 2020, we are still members of the AARP Medicare Advantage Plan 1 (HMO), with their Dental Platinum Rider, and we’ve been reasonably content with their performance on our behalf through a couple of arthroplasties, a cataract, an episode of cancer, and a claim for emergency care in Australia, although if they’d be interested, we could share a long list of improvements they’d do well to adopt.

We do wish, for instance, that they wouldn’t keep trying to bribe us to receive strangers into our home to perform ill-defined “assessments” that are either transparently unnecessary or entirely redundant with the services we already receive from Dr Mike, whom we know and trust. I must confess that I’m not impressed by the assertion that arrived in today’s mail that
…The results of this valuable in-home assessment will give Dr. Utah Pcp Not Selected [sic] an excellent picture of your health. It will also give you the opportunity to learn more ways to stay healthy — and earn a $15 gift card.

*Despite my long-standing strong disapproval of AARP as an organization, ever since it came out in favor of ObamaCare, while that governmental abortion was being rammed down the public throat.
