Lovely folks, all, and every one a volunteer! Thought you might like to meet them. The great irony that pursues this enterprise is always that the local Latter-day Saints pretty much universally make much less use of it than do their non-member neighbors.

Each Family History Center is a branch of the Salt Lake Family History Library, the largest one anywhere, and its patrons (anyone who comes in, or logs in to familysearch.org) are empowered to consult all its vast resources without charge. Many of our neighbors who don’t share our doctrinal reasons for seeking to know our kinfolk nevertheless feel driven to do so. We call it “The Spirit of Elijah”; they have a myriad of other names for it.

Me, for example. For years, now, I’ve devoted something like half-time to documenting the descendancies of immigrant ancestors: Munroe, Fisher, McLean, and now Russell couples who came to these shores in the 17th and 18th centuries. I do my research primarily via an on-line organization called Ancestry.com. The Church gives me (and any member who requests it), without charge, a rather pricey membership, for the purpose. And I hardly ever visit the Center.
