2004—Freedom |
After two more days on the road, we came to Freedom, Cattaraugus County, New York, about a hundred miles south of Buffalo. This was our first visit to this family treasure city. We found enough there to ensure that we would return.
You may recall that I had devoted my 61st birthday (15 February 2002) to wandering around the ancient city of Salem, Massachusetts, under the impression that I might find there evidences of the lives of my fourth great-grandparents, Oliver III and Salem native Hannah Ashby Wheeler. Perhaps even, thought I prayerfully, their graves. They weren’t there. Over the next couple of years, research taught me that the Wheelers had left Salem in 1816 and had eventually settled in Freedom. I even had a map of the Elton village cemetery, indicating Oliver’s grave. And indications that when they came here in 1827, they had lived on a certain corner lot in Elton. So we knew enough to find and photograph these two locations, and to plan a more extended later visit. |
