2003—“Berdoo” Reunion
To be sure, I had no right to feel bereaved or supplanted, when Pacific High School classmate Christy Sorenson encountered me at Nielsen’s Pharmacy and announced breathlessly that she was becoming Mrs Fred Elliott. We’d enjoyed only one date in the course of our acquaintance: she accompanied me to Sacrament Meeting one Sunday at the San Bernardino Third Ward. Her very Lutheran father saw to it that no sequels ensued. But the announcement caught me by surprise, and however I responded, it wasn’t very gracefully.

So when, toward the end of August, Christy learned that Valerie and I were coming to San Bernardino to take part in a reunion of Latter-day Saints then of the vicinity but now of the diaspora, she and Fred very kindly had us over for a lovely supper of kebabs and reminiscences.

Can’t say I’ve ever understood clearly whether Fred’s membership in the Church preceded Christy’s, but they enjoyed a long and fruitful “Mormon” marriage. If I recall correctly, they were already great-grandparents before this reunion. He, alas, has since predeceased her.

Back in our high-school days, Christy had always been the spark-plug of our class, and whenever we received invitations to return to reunions, we could always be sure that her name would appear prominently in lists of organizers. I don’t recall that she was involved in the gathering that brought us back this time, which makes me think that Fred and Christy joined the Church well after those days.
