The national clean-up project had only just reached Rouen. Except in the vicinity of the scaffolding at left, and above that at right, the grime of centuries still added distinctive contrasts to the gorgeous medieval sculptures and their settings. I guess it’s a definite improvement to have all these grand old buildings clean: that’s surely closer to the way they looked originally. Am I wrong, though, to observe that there was something cool about the old, dirty ones? |
