Appendix: Madrid

Madrid Branch Presidency:
Eddington, Baker, Timmons, Oliveira
Valerie remembers particularly the daredevil traffic of downtown Madrid. My strongest memories have to do with the cheapness of the daredevil taxis; also dinner, Spanish-style, within shouting distance of midnight, followed by an energetic display of flamenco dancing. Shades of Esmé.
The second trip, we stayed with the Fotheringhams. The Oliveiras and the Fotheringhams showed us marvelous hospitality; Valerie retains a memory of José Oliveira as the stereotypical dashing Spaniard. When I ask if she’s still a little bit in love with him, after all these years, she just smiles. He appears (rightmost) at left and also (top center) here, with members of the branch over which he presided.

3860fewPalacio.jpg Between meetings, we managed to visit the Palacio Real, the Prado Museum, and the Alcazar in Toledo. Picked up a few keepsakes, including a Toledo broadsword that the Hungers kindly brought back to the States for us. Named it Runcible.
