L’Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel |
Standing between the “arms” of the Louvre and looking westward through the central arch of L’Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel, we see as an overexposed blur the Place de la Concorde and, in the further distance, the Champs-Élysées.
This elegant monument, built 1806-1808 in honor of Napoleon’s then-recent victories, is about half the size of the big one at the far end of the Champs. They started them about the same time, but this one was finished about thirty years sooner. |
