Meanwhile, we told the Wanderers that we’d have to postpone our adoption plans until we returned to America, date uncertain. They said that was fine, and that once we got to France we should find an adoption agency over there and give them (the Wanderers) a call. Whereupon, said they, they’d send our dossier over the Pond, to facilitate the process.

But a few days before we were set to fly away, another call came from our Wandering friends: “It won’t do you any good to look for a French adoption agency. We’ve learned that there aren’t any private ones, like us. It’s all handled through the State or through the Church, and as foreign transient Protestants (wow!) you won’t be eligible for their attention.
