Rick’s SackbutRemember the old song about “Scarlet Ribbons”? The one with the line, “Searched all night; my heart was aching…”?Well, Rick wanted a sackbut. You don’t know whattheheck’s a sackbut? At age 2½, Rick knew. He knew what it looks like, and he knew what it sounds like. And he wanted one for Christmas. We cherish (then and now) an early New York Pro Musica recording (Decca DL 9424) entitled “The Renaissance Band,” in which the great Noah Greenberg demonstrated a wonderful array of old instruments. Rick would listen to that recording, over and over, studying the pictures, and he knew a consort of recorders from a krummhorn, with great precision and precocious musical enthusiasm… |
