Excursion to the Temple in Berne
April 4—President Hinckley came yesterday, accompanied by Sister Hinckley, Elder Bennion, and Elder Schneider (who, it seems, will replace The Longest Man as second counselor in the mission). They came to interview us for our trip to the Temple. We’re leaving a week from Monday, the 13th, at 2 am!

I seized the opportunity to acquaint President with some of the problems in the branch, and he promised to bring help to the branch conferences at month’s end.

Y’r h’ble s’rv’t, by the main doors of the Temple in Zollikofen (near Bern), Switzerland,
where Pappy and Mammy had stood less than a year earlier.
And that’s all I wrote. Or at least all I can find now.

I don’t seem to have written formal journal entries for the temple trip that capstoned The Great Big Mission Conference. Or at least whatever I wrote hasn’t yet turned up. Stay tuned. In the mean while, I’ll supply what memory retains in sidebar format.

Let me say at first that they don’t do big deals like this for missionaries, any longer: the rules and the Kingdom were a lot different, four and five decades ago. And it was surely not on my account that our beloved President Hinckley arranged for this marvelous experience to happen during the last full month of my first French Mission. But it surely felt like it. I was surely not the only one to cherish it in those terms.
